workshop
on authentication and analysis of gold work

11 - 13 May 2009
Paris

Work package 5 "Pilot studies on gold artefacts" led by the C2RMF in the 6FP-CT044480 project AUTHENTICO, organises a 3 days workshop entitled "AURUM: authentication and analysis of gold work". This workshop helds in Paris at the Louvre Palace in May 2009.

The forgery of original cultural heritage productions and fraudulent dealing of counterfeits has been increasing with time, which amplifies the difficulties connected to their authentication. Among these productions, gold work such as jewellery and coinages, are among those that suffer from this illicit traffic.

Workshop AURUM proposes to get together international experts on the different steps of production of gold work, on the science-base techniques used for authentication of gold work, and representatives of law enforcement agencies that fight against illicit traffic of the cultural heritage objects.

Workshop AURUM proposes to cover the different aspects of ancient gold work production from the exploitation of gold ores to the manufacture of the gold objects and their restoration and enhancing. The new analytical developments contributing to the authentication of gold work will be exposed and discussed.

Workshop AURUM gathers representatives of cultural heritage protection with archaeologists, chemists, geologists, art historians, metallurgists, physicists, jewellers and other experts whose research activities cover the study of gold work. The number of participants is limited to 70.

Workshop AURUM is divided in different sessions dedicated to the study of the manufacture and circulation of ancient gold artefacts and coinages, to the presentation of the state of the art in the scientific exam and analysis techniques used to study gold work and to the different aspects of forgery, trade and authentication of gold work.

The 13 May 2009 is dedicated to a special session on forgery, trade and authentication of gold work that consists on invited and regular talks as well as a roundtable that aims to enlarge the debate.

The main themes concerned by workshop AURUM are:
